Do you need llms.txt? What Google actually says.

llms.txt is often sold as the fix for AI visibility. Google’s own guidance says something different. Here is what the file is, what it is not, and what actually helps.

What llms.txt is.

llms.txt is a proposed convention: a plain-text file at the root of a site that summarises its most important pages for AI tools. Some AI tools and developer platforms read it. It is not a web standard, and support varies by tool.

What Google says.

Google’s guidance on AI features is direct. It says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations needed. It also says you do not need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup to appear in these features, and that there is no special schema.org structured data you need to add.

In short

For Google, llms.txt is optional. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, the same as ordinary search.

Where effort pays off instead.

  • Make sure the pages you care about are indexed and not blocked
  • Check that AI crawlers you want to allow are not blocked in robots.txt or by your CDN
  • Answer the questions your customers ask, clearly and early on the page
  • Keep structured data accurate and matching what the page shows
  • Keep your business details consistent everywhere they appear

Should you add one anyway?

It does no harm, and some tools outside Google may use it. Just do not treat it as a substitute for the work above, and be wary of anyone who sells it as the answer.

Will llms.txt get me into ChatGPT answers?

No file guarantees that. Different assistants use different sources and methods, and some do not read llms.txt at all.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt is a suggested summary of content; it does not grant or block access.

Do we need special schema for AI Overviews?

Google says no. Structured data still helps search engines understand your pages, so keep it accurate for its usual purposes.
