Creartful AIInsightsCore Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals in plain words.

Three measurements describe how a page feels to the person using it: how fast the main content appears, how quickly it responds, and whether it jumps around. Here is what each one means and what usually fixes it.

Three measurements.

LCP

Largest Contentful Paint. How long until the biggest thing on screen appears. Good is 2.5 seconds or less.

INP

Interaction to Next Paint. How quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks. Good is 200 milliseconds or less.

CLS

Cumulative Layout Shift. How much the layout jumps while it loads. Good is 0.1 or less.

INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Google measures all three from real visits in Chrome, at the 75th percentile, so the score reflects what most visitors experience rather than one fast test.

What usually fixes LCP.

  • Serve the hero image at the size it is shown, in a modern format
  • Do not lazy-load the image at the top of the page; let it load first
  • Cut the scripts and fonts that block the first render
  • Use a host and CDN close to your visitors

What usually fixes INP.

  • Remove apps and tags nobody uses any more; each one adds work to every click
  • Break long scripts into smaller pieces so the page can respond between them
  • Load chat widgets, reviews and other extras after the page is usable

What usually fixes CLS.

  • Give every image and video a width and height
  • Reserve space for banners, embeds and ads before they load
  • Load web fonts so text does not reflow when they arrive

Where to check yours.

Two places

The Core Web Vitals report in Search Console groups your pages by status from real-visit data. PageSpeed Insights shows the same field data for a single URL, plus a lab test with specific suggestions. Fix templates rather than single pages, since one template usually serves hundreds.

Read the FAQ
Do Core Web Vitals affect rankings?

They are part of Google's page experience signals. Good content still matters more, but a slow, jumpy page loses visitors whatever its ranking.

Why does my score differ between tools?

Lab tests run once on a simulated device. Field data comes from real visits over 28 days. Trust the field data for what visitors feel.

Can a theme or app slow my store down?

Yes. Every app or script that loads on a page adds work. Removing the ones you no longer use is often the quickest win.
