Agentic commerce: getting a store ready for AI shopping agents.
AI assistants are starting to research, compare and even buy on a shopper’s behalf. They read your store differently from a person. Here is what they need, and what you can do now.

What agentic commerce means.
An AI agent that shops for someone has to read products, prices, availability and policies, compare them, and sometimes complete a purchase.
Platforms and payment companies have begun publishing standards for how agents check out, and AI assistants are adding shopping features. The details are changing quickly. What is not changing is what an agent needs from your store: clear, accurate, structured information it can trust.
What an agent needs to read.
| Information | Where it lives | What goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Products | Titles, attributes, variants | Vague titles, missing sizes or materials |
| Price and stock | Page, markup and feed | Three sources that disagree |
| Identifiers | GTIN, MPN, brand | Missing or wrong codes |
| Policies | Shipping, returns, warranty pages | Hidden in images or vague wording |
What you can do now.
- Make product data complete. Every variant with its size, color, material and identifier, in the store itself.
- Keep one truth for price and stock. Markup and feeds generated from the store, so they change when it changes.
- Write policies in plain text. Shipping times, costs, return windows and conditions, on pages a machine can read.
- Mark it up. Product, Offer and Organization structured data that matches the page.
- Watch the standards, do not chase them. Adopt a new protocol when your platform supports it and your customers use it.
Why it pays off either way.
Good for every channel
Everything an agent needs, a person and a search engine need too. Complete product data, consistent prices and clear policies improve shopping results, free listings, email campaigns and conversion on your own site, whether or not agents arrive as fast as predicted.
Do I need to adopt a new checkout protocol now?
Not before your platform supports it and your customers use it. Start with complete, consistent product data and clear policies.
Is this only for big stores?
No. A small catalog with clean data is easier for an agent to read than a large one with gaps.
Which plan covers this?
Agentic commerce readiness is part of the Expedition plan. The groundwork, product data and markup, starts on every rebuild.
